Alice Paul, Ph.D.

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Alice Paul, Ph.D. to the position of Associate Professor of Biostatistics, Teaching Scholar, effective July 1, 2025. Paul joined the Department of Biostatistics in 2020. She received her Ph.D. in Operations Research from Cornell University and Bachelors of Science in Mathematics from Harvey Mudd College. Paul is currently the Associate Director of the Master’s Program in Biostatistics as well as the Director of the Undergraduate Statistics Concentration.

Paul’s research interests span algorithms, optimization, data science, and education, focusing on the design and analysis of optimization algorithms for machine learning, with applications in clustering, variable selection, risk models, and shared mobility systems. At Brown, she was honored with the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching in the School of Public Health in 2022. Additionally, she authored the book "Mastering Health Data Science Using R", which is available online and in print. Paul is also a member of the external advisory board for the NSF Institute Artificial Intelligence for Optimization and serves on the editorial board for the INFORMS Journal Transactions on Education.

In her free time, Paul is an organizer for a local running group and enjoys exploring the parks, beaches, and trails in Rhode Island, especially with her two kids.
