Master's entered 2022

Hannah Eglinton, Sc.M '24

After growing up in Portland, Maine, Hannah moved to Minnesota to attend Carleton College. As an undergraduate, she studied biology and mathematics, and completed a capstone project on CAR T-cell therapy. Before pursuing a master's degree, Hannah worked for two years in environmental health consulting, where she contributed to projects for federal clients like the EPA and NIEHS. Here at Brown, Hannah is working on her thesis with Dr. Alice Paul on using optimization approaches to develop risk score models.

Full Interview:

How has your time at Brown been?
My time at Brown has been great! I’ve really enjoyed the small class sizes in the biostats department, as I've gotten to know both my professors and the other students in my cohort.

How did you get into Statistics?
I was originally interested in biology and found myself getting drawn to the statistical and computational side of medical research rather than working at the bench. I realized that biostatistics is a great mix of my interests!

What are you looking forward to here at Brown?
Finishing my thesis! I’m working on an R package that builds simple risk score models. I’m hoping to make it accessible to clinicians, so it could be useful in real world decision-making.

How has Statistics education helped you?
I've become a better problem solver, approaching complex projects more systematically than I used to. My critical thinking abilities have also definitely improved, complementing the many hard skills I’ve learned during classes.

Favorite Statistics class?
My favorite statistics class so far has been Statistical Learning and Big Data. It helped me understand the theory behind machine learning algorithms and how to actually apply them. This was extremely helpful for my internship at a biotech startup last summer!

Favorite memory of your time at Brown?
I’ve liked the biostatistics department “Take Out Thursdays”, where we hear short talks from faculty and then get to eat delicious food! It’s been nice to hear what research is going on in the department in a low pressure environment.
