Yiwen Liang, Sc.M '24

A second year Sc.M student in Biostatistics. Yiwen grew up in Beijing, China and moved to Ohio to attend Ohio State University. As an undergraduate, she studied actuarial science before switching to statistics. Currently, Yiwen is working on her thesis with Dr. Christopher Schmid, analyzing the impact of urban heat islands on emergency medical services utilization in Rhode Island.

Biomedical and public health related studies are far more fascinating to me than finance!

How has your time at Brown been?
My time here at Brown is amazing! A small cohort size makes it possible for people to be closely connected. Students are supportive and friendly, while the professors are all approachable and willing to help.

How did you get into Statistics?
I majored in actuarial science when I got enrolled in undergrads, and my first ever statistics course was one of those required. The project in that course was about testing the effect of a drug, which inspired my interest in statistics and its applications in public health. So I changed my major to statistics and was determined to spend more time leveraging my statistical knowledge to improve patients’ lives and well-being. And that's why I chose to further my study in biostatistics.

What are you looking forward to here at Brown?
I'm a second-year student, and hopefully I'm able to apply what I've learned to my thesis project. Not only to complete the thesis but also to obtain useful findings that will actually benefit people's lives.

How has Statistics education helped you?
Statistical education provides us with mathematical and programming training and leads to better critical thinking and reasoning skills. Besides, I would emphasize the ability to read and evaluate journal articles, even if they are not strictly statistical papers. Statistics can be found in almost all journals. It becomes easier to understand and assess both the experimental design and the results with statistical knowledge.
