Biostatistics hosts College Day at Brown
Sixteen highschool students from Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls visited the Department of Biostatistics at Brown University School of Public Health for College Day!
On Wednesday, April 24th, sixteen highschool students from Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls visited the Department of Biostatistics at the School of Public Health to learn how statistics is applied to real-world problems in medicine and public health. This was part of College Day at Brown hosted by the Swearer Center.
The highschool students met with Alitzel Serrano, Masters Student at the Department of Biostatistics, Corinne Wahlberg, Project Coordinator, Center for Statistical Sciences, Anarina Murillo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biostatistics, and Jon Steingrimsson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biostatistics to discuss “How statistics is applied to real-world problems in medicine and public health”. They did this by having students analyze like a Data Scientist by playing a Virus Probability Game, and then introducing them to COVID-19 data and discuss the exposure of infected individuals, adherence to safety guidelines, socioeconomic status, and prevalence in the community through a powerpoint presentation created by the Department of Biostatistics team.
